How To Make Face Soap For Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin needs special attention when selecting products to use on your face. Your face is the one part of your body that is not covered by clothing. You can’t hide your face. Our goal is therefore to find what gentle ingredients are most appropriate for your skin. This will ensure that it remains in the best condition possible and helps to improve your situation.

Care needs to be taken to avoid a harsh reaction like a burning sensation or an acne breakout. You want to avoid products with artificial or strong fragrances, parabens, preservatives, and PEGs (petroleum-based compounds). These are the main factors that trigger a reaction.

You will also want to avoid Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS), another chemical that is harmful to the skin, and any colouring that doesn't occur naturally.

When making your own face soap, you may choose to add natural fragrances such as essential oils, botanicals, or a natural colourant to make it more interesting. This can only be done though if you are not too sensitive to environmental conditions and don’t have an allergy to a particular ingredient you wish you could add to your soap.

In this article, I will explain step by step how to make face soap for sensitive skin. The tools needed and the ingredients are listed below along with the directions for how to make a bar of soap are listed below.

Before You Begin

When purchasing ingredients, look for bases such as:

  • Melt & Pour Soap with Goat’s Milk. A pre-mixed block that can be quickly melted down in order to add your other ingredients.

  • Olive Oil or Jojoba Oil - rich in antioxidants.

  • Castile for moisture - originally made with pure olive oil in the Castile Region of Spain.

  • Glycerin is a humectant so it draws moisture from deeper levels of the skin right through to the top layer of the skin.

  • Aloe Vera has cooling properties and is an anti-inflammatory.

  • Shea Butter has high concentrations of fatty acids and is ideal for soothing the skin.

Any of these will make a good base. With this recipe, in particular, we will be using the Melt & Pour Soap with Goat’s Milk.

Other Ingredients To Consider

  • Raw Honey is great for gentle exfoliation and has super anti-bacterial, properties, especially for acne-prone skin.

  • Oatmeal Flour produces a protective barrier against bad bacteria and UV rays on the surface of the skin.

  • Pink Clay, a natural soap colourant, is also used to treat acne and firm and tighten skin.

  • Lavender Essential Oil (optional) to add a scent - as long as you’re not allergic.

Note: Sensitive skin can be tight and dry or oily and acne-prone. Always be sure to use ingredients you know will not flare up your skin.

Tools You Will Need

  • Old pots and an old spatula

  • A stick blender

  • Digital scales

  • Measuring cups and spoons

  • Silicone moulds or containers lined with wax paper. These can be all one shape or a variety of shapes. An old loaf pan lined with wax paper will also do and then you can cut the bars of soap into however many you want. Usually 4 large or 6 smaller bars.

Recipe For Sensitive Skin Face Soap

Using the Melt & Pour is a simpler, quicker process. We can explore cold-pressed soap-making in future articles. Today’s recipe includes the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 kg Melt & Pour Soap pre-mix

  • 1/2 cup oatmeal flour

  • 2 tbsp pink clay

  • 1 tbsp raw honey

  • 2 tbsp jojoba oil OR olive oil

  • 1 tsp lavender oil (optional)

Directions

1 —

  • In a double boiler, melt the soap pre-mix. This should take about 8-10 minutes until it’s fully melted. Leave the burner on medium heat so as not to burn it.

2 —

  • Before it cools too much, add the remaining ingredients, and using the stick blender on a medium speed, mix until thoroughly combined.

3 —

  • Pour the mixture into the silicone moulds/containers or loaf pan lined with wax paper. Let it sit for a few hours to harden or place it in the fridge if you’re impatient.

4 —

  • Once it is set, cut it into desired pieces and place each bar individually into a brown paper bag. Storage should be somewhere cool and dark such as a cupboard. Soap will last a long time if stored properly.

The beauty of this soap is that you can use it all over your body and not just for your face. The extra bars you have can be stored for future use or given away as gifts.
